Interactive ceramic sound sculptures
clay, sound composition, tactile transducer mics, silicone, aqua resin
4’ x 3’, 4’ x 2’8”
These sculptures represent the negative space of my body. When reaching down to grab my toes, I created an impression in clay, capturing the space around my body rather than its visual form. This clay body becomes a key figure in my work, representing my body in a more abstract way. I wanted to explore what my body is—not through visual perception, but through its interaction with space. Embedded within these sculptures are tactile speakers connected to an Arduino, making them sensitive to touch. As viewers interact with the sculptures, they trigger vibrations that play a sonic portrait I composed. The sounds come from sonic spaces my body inhabits—where it touches other things, and internal recordings of my body’s sounds. I’m exploring the idea of a sonic portrait of the body: if we couldn’t see, could we hear and feel the vibrations of our existence?
